Writing a book is a journey not a production line, especially when you self publish; and as it’s a creative process it can take many turns, meandering about as new ideas pop up and refuse to be silenced.
When you write a book, you live in that book, become friends or maybe enemies with its characters. You may think you’re in charge of the process, but sometimes there are forces at work within the imagination that we can never really understand. And when a character starts to speak, that’s when they find their voice and take on a life of their own. The trick is to let them, and see where they take you. Editing can come later, but let the magic happen.
Have you ever written a piece and then read it back and wondered where it came from? Or drawn an illustration that you can never recreate… because you’re really not sure how you drew it in the first place, it just seemed to flow out of your pencil. That is the magic of the imagination.
