Book signings are how I sell most of my books.
The advantages:
· People like to buy from an author and have a personally signed book.
· The joy of seeing a child choose my book, and then be so keen to read it, that they read it at the event or fair, because they simply can’t wait till they get home.
· Selling locally at an annual event gives the opportunity for building a following, and to get feedback from readers.
· To hear that one of my books has been loved and become dog-eared from constant reading is a joy!
· To do a book signing in a major bookshop is a thrill, and as the books all go through the tills there’s no need to sort the money side of the transaction, just chat about the book and sign it.
The disadvantages:
· Book signings are time consuming, from booking an event, prep before the event to put together an attention grabbing stand, and the day or days spent at the event.
· There is a limit to how many people I can reach.
· Signing and taking payments, having a float for cash, or facilitating card payments.
· Finding suitable events, craft fairs aren’t as popular as they once were.
