The art of being busy and productive…
What is the most productive occupation for a writer?
· Day dreaming: can be the most productive, whilst looking like the laziest. Gazing into space where scenes could be playing out in an invisible world.
· Doodling: where random sketches have the potential to become characters and illustrations. Where the mind can send a pen or pencil rambling about the page, making all or nothing… or even creating a character who will become the star of the next book.
· Writing: looks productive, and is at least getting words tapped out or written down, a quantifiable activity.
· Tapping away at a laptop: well here I am, tapping away at a laptop, creating content to throw into the abyss, it looks like the most productive activity of the afternoon, and yet…
I can’t help thinking that I should have stuck to sketching characters… books are filling up fast, and characters are taking on, well, characters of the own. They’ve met the paint box, and had a wonderful time trying on different colours and mediums, accessorising with different techniques.
And with that, I’m going back to sketching, but don’t go, have a wander around in the bookshop, meet some of the characters I managed to capture from previous daydreams and tempt into books of their own.
